Eczema & Psoriasis

Think Twice Before You Cover

Covering eczema or psoriasis with inappropriate cosmetics might aggravate it further.

Eczema is a general term encompassing various inflamed skin conditions. The exact causes are unknown, but generally linked to an overactive response by the body’s immune system. Common triggers include soaps, fabrics, sweat, animals, and other irritants. It is not contagious, but persistent and unsightly, characterized by reddish, dry and extremely itchy patches. Most of the time, it comes with blisters, therefore scratching can cause the skin to ooze pus and create crusty scabs on the skin.

psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic, recurring condition that is caused by an overproduction of skin cells. The dead skin cells build up and accumulate into thick patches of white scales, causing serious itching.
The unpredictable nature of psoriasis makes treatment challenging for many. It is important to be open-minded and willing to work with your doctor to find one that works. Our team of experienced doctors are here to plan the best possible treatments for you.

What We Can Do

Prevent scratching is the priority in the case of eczema and psoriasis, as they are usually dry and itchy. The most common treatment is topical medications to keep the skin moist and reduce the itch.

For severe cases, oral antihistamines or corticosteroids may be prescribed to control the symptoms more effectively. Antibiotics will be necessary should the skin show signs of infection. Supplements like omega-3, vitamin D and vitamin E could aid in skin healing.

Phototherapy is a procedure that carefully exposes the skin to UV wavelengths to control the growth of skin cells, effectively reduce rashes, scaling and itching.
